[Interview] WOO CHONGIL with Gallery BK x Art Terms

OCTOBER 30, 2020

Chong-il Woo(b. 1957) is a Korean photographer who is widely recognized with his series, entitled 'Women of the Joseon Dynasty'. Expressing the traditional beauty of Korea, this series of 'Women of the Joseon Dynasty' presents Woo's view on Korea's modern history and his reinterpretation of Korea's beauty. The artwork challenges its own identity as a work of photography and fine art as the photograph is carefully patterned and consists of individually shot gemstones. Art Terms X GALLERY BK are honored to have interviewed with WOO CHONGIL. We would like to share this wonderful experience to all.

"There are these beautiful women, and I thought I needed a material that suits them. Then I thought of stones. Because

they contain a lot of time and history. Stones have existed before humanity, so I thought this was it. As time goes by, stones wear out and

become more beautiful. And that is what I think about beauty. So, I started working with stone."
