The 1st generation of A.I Artist, Refik Anadol

by Suhyun Kim

Born in Istanbul, Turkey and now based in Los Angeles, Refik Anadol belongs to the first digital generation who participated in the Machine Learning Program in Google. Artist Refik Anadol questions the possibility of a post digital architectural future in which there are no more non-digital. Collaborating with artificial intelligence, Anadol utilizes interior and exterior architectural fa çades as his canvas.

Anadol has recently created the digital mapping of the Disney Hall, and this time brought it inside 'ARTECHOUSE'. He presented <Machine Hallucination> which reproduced the future New York from late 2019 to early 2020 at 'ARTECHOUSE', New York. It was based on the data that AI has collected, and it creates visuals of New York buildings. From 8 million photos related to New York City and social media posts, it links the output to reshuffled memories of a human dream. Images of people were excluded due to respect for privacy.

The exhibition shows the future of New York City from the pieces of memories left by visitors. The moments of people unconsciously capturing Manhattan's buildings and culture on camera are newly built from the perspective of AI. Anadol gave a tip, 'If you enjoy the artwork that you might foresee the future architecture.' Images of New York blend and merge and change quickly. The skyline shifting into a sunrise, trees appearing and disappearing, buildings growing and shrinking like in the movie <Inception>. They feel like a long supercut of memories of places, nostalgic and low-lit, suggestive but not clear.

ARTECHOUSE’ is a cutting-edge destination for immersive art exhibitions at the crossroads of art, science, and technology. It opened its branches in Washington and Miami in 2015 and landed in New York in 2019. For its debut in Chelsea Market, the exhibition harnessed machine learning to render New York’s most renowned spaces in stunning new ways. It used to be a boiler room of the Chelsea Market which Google and New York are placed at.

Anadol’s is a highly mechanical way of understanding dreams: data in, memory formed, dreams out. It’s crucial that we get new technology in the hands of artists because they have an ability to present the ideas of their time in a way that can help shape the culture that is more magical, ethical, and challenging. Starting with Refik Anadol, we are excited for the growth of ARTECHOUSE which will become the mecca for New York media art.
