December
in Miami gets a real buzz out of the Art Week. During the week, Art Basel Miami⎯one of the most important international art fairs⎯ takes place. Celebrating
the end of the year, artists, gallerists, collectors and aficionados from
around the world gather and party around the clock at private art museums in
Miami. Among them, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is best known for its “spectacular” design. Founded in 1984 as the
Center for the Fine Arts, it became known as the Miami Art Museum from 1996. Until
it was renamed in 2013 as PAMM upon the opening of its new building designed by
Herzog & de Meuron after the name of Jorge M. Pérez who donated his collections and made
a gift of $35 million for the new museum.
Jorge M. Pérez, the man who is as influential as to rename the museum ⎯ who is he?
Moving
to Miami at the age of nineteen, Pérez built his fortune by building and operating low-income
multifamily as well as skyscraper condo projects across Miami. He has been
called the “Donald Trump of the Tropics”, but interestingly, he was an active
Democratic fundraiser for the failed presidencial campaign of Senator Hill
Clinton. Influenced by his mother who loved
art and had a great library in Cuba, Pérez was naturally inclined to
art collection. He has also pledged to donate his entire collection to the
museum after his death.
PAMM
shows local Hispanic artists as well as master artists like Pablo Picasso and
Christo & Jeanne-Claude. During Art Basel 2019, Pérez openes a new art space called “El Espacio 23” housing galleries and residencies for the promotion of young
artists and curators. Perez says that he wanted to promote artists from around
the world by creating the art space in which contemporary artists can come and
work.
The
Argentine American billionaire has already done much for the arts community in
his city of Miami. Now let us get a peek inside his home. Pérez’s Venetian-style home serves as an equally
vibrant, frequently rotating gallery for his extensive private collection. The house is ideally laid out with the paintings, sculptures,
and phjotographs arrayed against pristine walls.
“I’m lucky because I get to buy for my own collection as well as for
the museum and my developments”, he explains. His passion
for giving is inspired and rooted in a desire to make a difference for
individua; artists and communities alike.
